The Nachshon Minyan was established to bring a unique Jewish experience to the San Fernando Valley. Our goal is to reach out to those who have felt disconnected from Judaism or for whom it seems to have little relevance to their lives. We understand those feelings because many of us have felt the same way. We are a warm and welcoming community that observes Shabbat and holidays with services that are meaningful, joyful and inspiring.

Rabbi/Cantor Judy Greenfeld

The founder and spiritual leader of the Nachshon Minyan in Encino, CA, Rabbi/Cantor Judy Greenfeld has a clear goal; to “reach out to people who have been disillusioned — the unaffiliated, and the unfulfilliated, and give them something that is educational, personal and beautiful.”  Rabbi/Cantor Greenfeld’s work in that regard has resulted in profiles in both local and national publications including the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles which stated that “….everything the Nachshon Minyan comprises …is imbued with a spiritual inclusiveness that has drawn a devoted and burgeoning membership”. In addition to her work with the Nachshon Minyan, Rabbi/Cantor Greenfeld has served on the Executive Board of the Cantors Assembly (CA) and, in 2009, participated in an international initiative which brought 100 Cantors to Poland.  There, she had a solo performance at Krakow’s Philharmonic Hall and appeared in the acclaimed follow-up documentary, “100 Voices: A Journey Home.” Rabbi/Cantor Greenfeld did her undergraduate work at the University of Arizona and received her Cantorial ordination as well as a Master’s Degree in Jewish Sacred Music from the Academy for Jewish Religion, California. She was also ordained at their Rabbinic school. She is the co-author (with Dr. Tamar Frankiel) of two books, Minding the Temple of the Soul and Entering the Temple of Dreams which detail a new approach to Jewish prayer through movement and meditation. Rabbi/Cantor Greenfeld has lectured and taught movement and prayer at retreats and synagogues around the United States. She has also released two CDs, “Leap of Faith: The Nachshon Minyan Sings the Sabbath” and "When You Lie Down and When You Rise Up: Jewish prayers to begin and end your day in a meaningful way".  A resident of Encino, Rabbi/Cantor Greenfeld is the proud mother of Samantha and David.

Rabbi/Cantor Greenfeld is licensed to officiate at lifecycle events including Bar and Bat Mitzvah services and Weddings.
